Vilages is situated to 20 kilometers from Hunedoara in the Country of Pădureni, at an altitude ranging between 500 and 900 meters, covers an area of 4683 hectares and consists of, besides the common, three other villages: Ruda, Govăjdia and Plop plus a small settlement:Mănăstire, is documentary attested since ancient times (213-215 years IC), as a place where the iron ore extracted. Constantin Daicoviciu estimated that ancient inscription "Ubi natus ibi Ferrum nascitur (born where iron is born), contained in Inscriptiorum Corpus Latinorum, refers to Ghelari.
In Ghelari is an impressive cathedral is a symbol not only for local but also for the entire region of Hunedoara. For the local church has a special sentimental value because it was built by the efforts of its entire community in peroada when the country is under heavy testing: war, regime change is in full over the leadership of the Communist Party.
The main economic activity was up in 2002 the mining, then made available in several stages, open operation over 2000 years is now closed, entering into a conservation program. In early nineteenth century (1810) in Govajdia, Hunedoara County, was given in use the most modern melting furnace of iron ore in Europe these days, molten iron stand here today at the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
The old furnace was declared monument of industrial architecture (Law No 5 of 6 March 2000).
